Crossing The Screen filmfest awards Iran’s ‘Gando’

The Crossing The Screen Film Festival in the UK has awarded the acclaimed Iranian short documentary ‘Gando’.

The short doc, directed by Teimour Qaderi, received the special jury award at the 5th edition of the British event.

‘Gando’ tells the story of a little girl named Hawa, who lives in a village in the Iranian province of Sistan and Balouchestan. She has been attacked by a crocodile and lost her arm.

The little girl shown in the flick is one of many kids in the province who have to travel long paths to fetch water from ponds where Gandos (type of crocodile local to south of Iran) reside.

The little kids are attacked by the wild reptiles and as a result they are either eaten alive or mutilated.

The 8-minute flick participated in a number of global events and won some awards, including Best Documentary Short award at the Chicago Southland International Film Festival in the US, best documentary award at the Muslim Film Festival in Australia, best film award at the Humboldt International Film Festival in the US, honorary diploma at the VGIK International Student Festival in Russia, and Honorary Mention at the International Maritime Film Festival in the US.

The Sussex-based Crossing The Screen Film Festival is an international event to showcase innovative and independent forms of visual art from all over the world.

The 5th edition of the event was held online-only, for the first time due to the coronavirus pandemic, on November 26-29.
